When the results were in, we couldn’t have been happier.  Come to find out, the soil at BLACK BEAR VINEYARD has the optimal composition of nutrients and organic matter for certain varietal grapes grown in the Northeast. As one expert explained, it’s like the glaciers that formed in this area tens of thousands of years ago slid right past our land leaving the perfect combination of gravel, silt, clay and rich layer of top soil.

We began the research into growing grapes in the Northeast and visited a number of Vineyards in New Hampshire and Vermont.  From what we have learned, growing grapes to suitable for wine making is not an easy task.  First, you have to make sure you have the right location and type of soil to grow grapes.  Then, after you plant your grape vines, it takes a minimum of three years before your first crop can be harvested.  Even then, there is no guarantee that those grapes will produce a fine wine.  Needless to say, we were a bit intimidated by this proposition but oh, how we love a good challenge.

While visiting some NH Vineyards we had met Dr. Peter Oldak who is the owner of Jewell Towne Vineyards  in N.Hampton, NH.  Dr. Oldak was a wealth of knowledge and extremely informative on the subject of growing grapes in NH.
